Title: What Are Production Companies Looking For?
Written On: April 2001 By: Staff

What do production companies look for these days. We asked lighting, sound and video companies what qualities they look for. For example, what educational qualifications do they require, and in what format?

To get that gig, first and foremost you will need to get the attention of the employer. Chances are if you have been in the industry for a while, you’re aware that knowing the right person still reigns above the rest. If this is an option not available to you, then perhaps you can take these suggestions from the people who wish to hire you.

Got A Gig?

When a position needs to be filled, an employer will first call his roster of freelancers. If they can’t fill the obligation, chances are that they will then go to the resumes. This medieval way of gaining employment is still very popular. The fastest way to get your resume filed in the shredder? Lie - this industry is far too small to mess with the truth. A number of companies mentioned individuals who would say they were engineers when in all actuality they were just stagehands. Some people have actually lied to a company about that supplied the gear on the same show

Sending audio & video products is also an option. Unfortunately though, most times they aren’t even seen. An employer will have to make a decision fast so most times hiring an unknown is a last resort. Websites are handy since most office computers have a direct Internet connection. We will be bringing you website tips soon. Some companies even go to temp agencies for extra
employees.

So what are companies looking for when it comes to education? You stand a much better chance with a computer background. It’s never too late to learn, and the statement that computers are too expensive doesn’t work anymore. Sound & lighting consoles are all moving in a digital direction.

This industry used to laugh at people who went to school for going on the road. These days gear on the road requires more knowledge and training to maintain. Again, lying on your resume that you have knowledge of particular
equipment could get you into hot water. A number of people will actually say they know how to run a piece of gear after just reading the manual.

Once you get the gig, a good attitude becomes a big plus. We all get so preoccupied with trying to tell an employer what we can do instead of just showing them. Production companies constantly face young talents who think they know everything. Young employees feeling that load-ins and load-outs are beyond them just doesn’t rate well with the boss. Companies are looking
for people who represent them on a positive level.

It's very easy to stand out above the rest by excerpting a little extra enthusiasm and knowledge. There is so much work out there that a number of companies are looking for an individual who can represent their company and image in a positive way. Good luck in your endeavors.
