Title: Advice for new roadogz
Written On: Jan 2003 By: Brandon Atnip

I have been a local union stagehand for almost 10 years, working mostly in theater. One of the most common problems that I see with new roadies is arrogance, especially in rock and roll, who knows maybe I was the same way when I first went out. These new guyz think they are the only one who knows how to run data or address moving lites. In fact in my local it is required to know these things. The best way to turn me off is to assume i know nothing. In fact it is better to ask if we know, not to assume we don't. The person that I am trying to take care of is not the roadie, it is my department head that I am working for that day. Afterall that is the guy I have to work for on a regular basis.

If you consult the department head on a task you need completed, he/she will know which guyz to send on any given mission. If you keep him happy and informed you don't need to hardly even deal with the lower guyz becouse they will take their orders from the head. They will also give more respect and work harder for their department head. I like to think that I am one of the guyz who makes a roadies job and day easier. Another thing to remember is that alot of local guyz , especially in union venues, have been on the road. Most of us know what roadogz are looking for out of our days work with them. Those that don't know what they are doing will be weeded out by the department head. A good department head knows their crews, their buildings, and who is capable of doing what. A good department head also knows how to make your life hell for a day. Consulting him/her first thing in the morning or evening is always a good idea.

Good luck new guys A concerned local guy
